Wired Woman Networking Event a Success - April 3, 2009

by Victoria Revay

Last night I was the guest of Dina Grskovich from the Wired Woman’s mentorship program for their Spring Fashion and Networking event. It was held at Radical Entertainment. There were more than 135 women (and a few men) that represented the diverse technology industry in Vancouver–a great turn out on a Thursday night. The event was held to raise money for the mentorship program, which is a 6-month program that runs from September through February each year. The program helps place a limited number of Wired Woman members in mentoring relationships and these mentors meet with mentees at least one hour, monthly, for the duration of the mentoring relationship. Read more - Techvibes Blog

Planning for a Spectacular 2009: A Wired Woman Seminar with Michael Walsh of Kaizen Consulting, 5th March 2009

Michael Walsh of Kaizen Consulting Services entertained and motivated the Wired Woman group at our latest seminar, hosted by the Campoverde Social Club on Thursday 5th March. His practical and humorous talk centred on planning for a great year, despite trying times. Rather than focussing on the doom and gloom prevalent in the media, Michael urged the group to use the current recession as an opportunity to concentrate on reorganization and building stronger communities and partnerships. Outlining practical strategies such as writing down a yearly plan (including accomplishments from 2008, and breaking down what is working and what is missing in your business), Michael also spoke about the importance of structuring your time to include networking and improving relationships with current clients. Particularly relevant to the Wired Woman Society, Michael spoke about the importance of networking with integrity - focusing not on collecting business cards, but rather on forging quality relationships. Michael left the group with lots to think about, as well as practical tools and a positive message, ensuring that we all create our own spectacular 2009.

Forum gets $405,000 to lure women to IT - March 18, 2009

by Briony Smith, ComputerWorld Canada

"There’s still a stereotype out there that a career in IT means working as a computer geek. Technology is all around us – we use it everyday, which means that IT jobs are potentially everywhere too," said Carol Parnell, president of the Canadian organization for women in IT, Wired Woman. "With baby boomers retiring there is already a shortage of skilled, qualified workers, providing opportunities for women in technology programs."

Where Did the Time Go? A Wired Woman Seminar with Ghost CEO’s Heather White - January 23, 2009

Heather White, entrepreneur, innovator and self-proclaimed “fire starter” lead an inspiring and challenging discussion on time management at the latest Wired Woman seminar on Thursday 23 January 2009 at VCC. Along with practical advice for managing time and getting those To Do lists under control, Heather dared us to ask ourselves the Big Questions: what do I want to do? What do I want to be? And what do I want to have? She also spoke about time-saving business strategies, learning to say no and about using our emotions as feedback in our lives to make changes. She also reminded us as women (and men, of course) to take care of ourselves first, so we maintain our energy and excitement for life. Heather’s sense of humour, passion and practical ideas inspired the audience of Wired Woman members and VCC students to put those Big Questions at the top of our To Do lists, without delay!
